Dome changes
The Pavilion Theatre – home to the monthly SOURCE New Music nights – has been re-named Brighton Dome Studio. The venue is gearing up for one of its busiest periods of the year as the Brighton Comedy Festival returns to the Dome complex, Fri 5th – Sat 20th. Richard Herring, Josie Long and Robin Ince are among those taking to the Studio stage. This month’s SOURCE New Music follows on Thurs 25th, with headliners Restlesslist.
Dizzee shakes
The outdoor festival season closes on a high this month, as Shakedown returns for its second year on Sat 6th. Coalition host the main Stanmer Park stage, with headliners Dizzee Rascal, Professor Green and Katy B, while Chase And Status, Knife Party and Zane Lowe top the Supercharged Arena bill. Fresher welcome
Freshtival is a two week programme across the University of Brighton, designed to give all new students a great introduction to this wonderful city we live in. The jam-packed itinerary includes live gigs, comedy nights, a tour of the city and the freshers’ fair. Maccabees nominated
SOURCE friends The Maccabees have made the shortlist for this year’s Mercury Prize. The band’s third album ‘Given To The Wild’ goes up against major releases from Plan B, Lianne La Havas, Michael Kiwanuka and Jessie Ware. With nominees Django Django, Field Music and Alt-J also regularly on the office stereo, we can’t decide where to place our bets for this one. The Prize is announced at Camden’s Roundhouse on November 1st.
City TV
Brighton and Hove is one of the first cities in the country to receive its own local television station, under new broadcasting legislation. TV regulator Ofcom awarded the right to begin broadcasting across the region to Latest TV, part of the city’s Latest media group. The new channel aims to begin broadcasting across the region some time next year.
Xmas craft
Vintage clothing emporium Wolf & Gypsy is inviting local students and designers to supply their store with handmade gift items to sell over Christmas. Items the Sydney Street shop are seeking include homeware, soft furnishings, artwork, accessories and stationery – but not clothes. Email product information, photos and a wholesale price list to [email protected] by Sat 20th (over 18s only). They’ll respond to successful applicants by Sat 10th Nov.
Early sounds
Brighton Early Music Festival returns this month for a celebration of music from centuries past. One of the largest festivals of its kind, the BREMF programme mixes classical and choral performances with dance and theatre, many of which take place in Brighton’s oldest and grandest churches. Featured composers include Bach and Gabrieli, with other concerts focusing on Renaissance, klezmer and coronation music. The festival runs Fri 26th Oct to Sun 11th Nov, read up on it at bremf.org.uk
Whale meet
Thirty years ago, the International Whaling Commission met at the Hilton Brighton Metropole and announced a moratorium on commercial whaling. This month, the international community returns to the Hilton for Save The Whales: Reloaded, a convention debating the next steps in whale and dolphin conservation. It’s accompanied by WhaleFest, a weekend of events, talks and films for all ages at the Hilton (Sat 27th – Sun 28th) and a WhaleFest Fringe week of art, music and activities around the city.
