Secret Eater: Los Tequitos

Los Tequitos

Los Tequitos doesn’t look like much from the outside. Coming on like a Mexican cafe, it’s honest and authentic at least. But we’re here for the food.

The Place
The last place our friend Emma recommended to us was Bom Banes and we loved it there, so when she suggested we try out Mexican joint Los Tequitos we jumped at the chance, especially as we were still a little skint from the luxury of Santiago last month. To be honest Los Tequitos doesn’t look like much from the outside. In fact it doesn’t look like much from the inside either. Coming on like a Mexican café, it’s honest and authentic at least. But we’re here for the food.

The Meal
The first thing we notice is that it’s cheap. We rack up a list of things to try only to be told by the waiter/chef that we’ve ordered too much. He’s insistent that we cut our order. “I want you to enjoy your food,” he says. So we start with cheese nachos (£3.25) with both plenty of cheese and plenty of nachos. The former is mild but the homemade salsa has a nice kick. The surprise is the guacamole, a dip neither of us likes. It’s tasty – full of garlic – and we wolf it down. From there it’s straight onto the main courses, a massive steak enchilada (£4.75), full of spicy, almost barbequey, sauce topped with salad and salsa, and a chicken quesadilla. Much of the menu – and indeed Mexican food – is based around tortillas, but the quesadilla is flat and toasted for a nice change. Inside, the chicken and cheese was described as an “odd combination” by our dining partner, but was interesting.

Verdict
That’s a lot of food for the money. We spent just £11.50 and were completely stuffed, both leaving food on the plate. For a proper square meal, that can’t really be beaten – Grubbs is down the road and Los Tequitos makes a very interesting change for much the same price. It’s also really relaxed, we ended up sitting around for a while after eating, and no one minded.

Were We Sussed?
Definitely not, because we told them at the end of the meal and they were surprised. The service was incredible, especially for an eatery with more of a café vibe, and that might have been because we mentioned that our friend sent us. Probably not though – they just seemed like really nice people.
