Art: Contact

Photography has long been an accepted art form, accepted as such over mere reportage since the early 20th Century.

In recent years though, its currency has soared. Certainly in financial terms, where Sotheby’s are able to sell a single photograph for over three million dollars, but also its proliferation as the most accessible artistic medium the world over. Digital cameras, Flickr and even emerging pockets of niche techniques like Lomography have all seen us reaching for our cameras even when we’re not on holiday.

The University of Brighton has a long tradition of turning out amazing graduates of photography, as regular strolls past the gallery on Grand Parade will confirm. This month sees the second year students present Contact, an exhibition which aspires to connect with the audience via the visual presentation of the students’ growth and development as well as interact directly with them. Everyone will obviously take their own meaning from the images on display, but having their creators on hand to offer their own explanations as well as sharing their technical methods offers a unique all round experience.
