Reigning Women returns to The Old Market this month with a celebration of “kick-ass women that are strutting their stuff”. This mini season of events provides a platform for established and rising female performers across numerous genres, from poets and musicians to comedians and artists. It kicks off on February 21st at Hove’s number one grassroots indie venue…
The first show of the season, Rocket Fuel Comedy, brings together four women currently making names for themselves on the comedy circuit: Sikisa, Alexandra Haddow, Bec Hill and Jen Brister. These are the sort of comedians you’ll soon see doing spots on panel shows, if you haven’t already. It’s an impressive line-up for a £15 ticket.
The following night, Naomi Wood takes us on a personal journey exploring queerness, social media and weird human habits. She’s a multi-disciplinary artist who tells her tale through an unlikely but intriguing combination of spoken word and aerial circus performance. Naomi is also running a creative writing workshop at the venue on Feb 11th.
On February 29th, Jennifer Irons provides a cabaret-style survival guide to living in the frozen wastes of northern Canada. This humorous and tender show is based on Jen’s real experiences of growing up in the Yukon where she says the locals entertain themselves by tossing chainsaws and drinking – presumably not at the same time, but you never know.
The season continues into March with Rosy Carrick’s latest show, Musclebound. The erstwhile host of the annual Poets Vs MCs battle takes us on frank and funny tour of her erotic fantasies, working through her obsession with 80s action heroes while pondering what advice to give her teenage daughter. “Confident and provocative, Rosy Carrick is great at sex,” says the blurb. You gonna doubt it?
More local talent will take to the stage of The Old Market on March 7th for Vivid, a showcase of upcoming acts which feels like the centrepiece show of the season. The line-up includes Brighton-based soul and r‘n’b vocalists Scarlett Fae and Sylvia Mwenze (AKA ‘Mwetcha’), AFLO. The Poet and neo-soul songwriter Kymara. More acts are to be confirmed.
The season also includes performance poetry from Jenny Foulds, contemporary dance from Ceyda Tanc Dance and stand-up comedy from Jessica Fostekew. Laura Ramoso and Hollie McNish have already sold out, so you need to move quick. See full details here.
