Street Source No.1

This is the beginning of a new regular feature showcasing photos taken around Brighton over the course of a month by one of our SOURCE photographers. The photos don’t have a theme, nor do they necessarily have to capture particular events.

The idea is to share spontaneous moments around town – be it incidental street scenes, snapshots of people’s lives or images of the city as a landscape. Each month we’ll have images from a different photographer. Here’s what March looked like through Mike Tudor’s lens as our city defrosts, the sun comes out and we feel the impact of Storm Katie.

Montpelier Road, 12th March
When moving or clearing out, lots of people leave unwanted furniture and items outside their houses that are free for the taking. You can get some good finds, maybe a nice new chair.

West Street, 12th March
The weather had just started to get better. While it wasn’t a whole lot warmer the sun had finally started to show its face and the pavements were dry. You could tell this VW van was freshly cleaned and polished, maybe a winter project to renovate it or getting it set up for a summer road trip.

The Beach, 12th March
The West Pier is one of the most photographed landmarks in the city, but I was more interested in how keen residents were to hit the beach the moment the weather started to change. People were already chilling on the beach and watching the tide while the sun set.

Churchill Square, 12th March
There’s lots of buskers around Brighton, they add to the sound and vibrancy of the city. It’s not always easy to get busy people’s attention as they walk by, but the good ones can draw a crowd.

Western Road, 13th March
You might have seen the viral video of this guy banging out the music, dancing in a yellow suit and drawing in a hugely enthusiastic elderly local to dance on Queens’ Road. Usually a beacon of positivity, this is the moment the alarms were going off and security arrived.

Western Road, 13th March
The grin on the bassist’s face was reason enough to be drawn to these guys. The sun was shining, the streets were busy and you could hear these guys all the way up and down Western Road.

Seafront, 13th March
It had been a hot day and the sun was setting, there was lots of reasons to be a touch dehydrated at this point in the weekend. Being a large furry dog is surely one of them, and he was getting a quick drink.

King’s Road, 25th March
In the past I’ve seen bands set up on similar balconies and play out to the street, or during Pride you see sound systems with their speakers turned out of the windows to a crowd below. Other times, residents are just looking out over their city.

Seafront, 25th March
You get a lot of bold fashion in Brighton, so much so that it’s hard to stand out. However, a bright red jacket like this certainly caught the eye of the people behind.

Seafront, 28th March
Storm Katie hit Brighton with the rain and high winds causing damage and a fair amount of trouble over night. The tides were still fierce the following morning, pummelling the already fragile pier and crashing into the pillars.

Seafront, 28th March
There’s a huge amount of building work going on around the new i360 tower and along the seafront. Storm Katie had blown down all the fencing around the walkways, reminding how open and clear the view across the seafront usually is.
