Jonny Woo's Gay Bingo starts this month, find out more in Brighton SOURCE magazine, Brighton's best music, arts, club and listings magazine.

NIGHTS, SIGHTS AND RETAIL DELIGHTS

THE YARD •
We had kinda given up on the Ocean Rooms re-opening as a club – in our heart of hearts we expected it to turn into luxury flats or something. But, hey, it’s back with load of cool Londoners in charge. So far it pretty much looks the same, except for a pretty cool street arty middle room, but so far there seems to be a more gay/straight mixed crowd. There’s loads of new nights, most excitingly ‘s Big Love which pops in on Sat 2nd. Expect loads of house, pop and indie.

BRIGHTON POD •
We got a Tweet about this new website promoting and selling original designs from our most talented designers and craftspeople. Brightonpod.com is the place to go to secure ownership of a diplodocus lamp, a proper old school trimphone and a union jack doormat. The gear is attractively priced and is a good alternative to the everyone’s-got-that stuff on the high street.

EGREMONT PLACE •
Having scored a success during the Artists’ Open Houses in May with their Open House Virgins exhibits, Stephanie Young and Juliette Easter have decided to open their home for a weekend every month as Egremont Space. All kinds of stuff like art, workshops, music and performance will keep the space moving each month, with a variety of works by local up and coming artists helping them up the art ladder. The next open weekend starts on Saturday 9th at 16 Egremont Place, from noon-6pm. Wipe your feet!

WHO ARE THESE KIDS?! •
Who Are These Kids?! And what is New Hero?! Despite being a ‘nitespot and discotheque’ since the 60s, Dyke Road’s gothic fronted club is still relatively and undeservedly unknown. But now it boasts a new live PA and hosts a novel mix of 80s nights, rock gigs and as of Friday 29th, monthly hip hop night Who Are These Kids?! Launching with local scratch DJ gang Grandeurs of Delusion in a Hallowe’en special, this night offers the dangerous combination of danceable rhythms and very cheap drinks.

CBGB & OMFUG •
This new night at Komedia on Saturday 2nd promises to be the best place to be for all punk fans, with music dedicated to bands who famously played at the legendary New York club CBGB. Dating back from the 70s right up to 2005, the club played host to some of the most revolutionary bands – the likes of Blondie, Bad Brains, Black Flag and of course the Ramones, all likely on the playlist tonight.

JONNY WOO’S GAY BINGO
Jam explodes with number-based double entendres on Thursday 22nd for the first monthly installment of Johnny Woo’s Gay Bingo, from 11pm-3am. As one might imagine, it’s a riotous evening of performance pieces, dressing up, dancing to electro and cackling, all alongside the actual eyes down action of the bingo itself. Unsurprising fans include Graham Norton and Pete Burns among their number, less obvious devotees apparently include Keiffer Sutherland. We can imagine his joy at the call: “24 – drink and drive more.”

KIN BAR
It gives us enormous pleasure to bring you news that a venue has opened – you know, like the opposite of closing. Launching into the fray on Thursday 14th with Baghdad Country Club coming to town, the bar aims to become a hub for new music. They have a free entry policy for their shows, as well as a smokin’ hot atmosphere to rival its former days as Hove’s infamous strip joint, and an ‘ass walloping new PA system’ to boot.

SO DARN HOPE
Like a delightful marriage of two SOURCE favourites, the most excellent fellows at So Darn So – promoters of the most wonderful pastoral nu folk (in the shape of Communion, Thursdays from the 28th), weird indie, lo-fi pop, irregular rock n roll and all things in between – have made an honest woman of the Hope. They’ll be packing upstairs to the gills with the likes of Wild Palms and Flashguns, plus a load of amazing club nights and the promise of free gigs to boot. Confetti at the ready now.
