Jon Harper for Brighton's SOURCE magazine, Brighton's best listings, music, arts, culture magazine

BIMM THERE, DONE THAT

BIMM have teamed up with Total Guitar and Metal Hammer magazines once more to coach future Bonos and Edges. So far Dom Greensmith from Reef, Jon Harper from CSS/Cooper Temple Clause and Damon Minchella of Ocean Colour Scene fame are all tutoring. Learn what really makes a great musician, straight from the horses’ mouths. The Metal Hammer course also offers up the chance to win an Orange guitar stack for best guitarist, plus swag bags full of choice kit also to be had.

MEDICINE CHEST OPENS

After over fifteen years serving vegetarian cuisine we are desperately sad to hear that the Sanctuary Cafe will be shutting its doors. Taking some of the hurt away is the news that the space will become The Medicine Chest. Serving to cure all alcoholic fancies, with a range of fine wines, deliciously inventive cocktails and refined spirits. Anticipate an exquisite and all new range of eats and handpicked entertainment, live music included. The ‘Chest also boasts a late license, making this the night or day hangout.

PARTY IN THE ‘HOOD

The 29th celebration of the Brunswick community run by local residents and volunteers. This year there are two weekends of outdoor fun lined-up, with the annual Scruffs dog show, arts and crafts and kid’s stuff Sunday 15th, bringing the countryside into the city in St Anne’s Well gardens. Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd see Brunswick Square turn into a hotbed of culture: music, theatre, dance, beer, world food and loads more. Ain’t no party like a Brunswick community party.

TALLY-HO TEAM

School friends and Brighton residents Laura and Paul are embarking on the 2010 Mongol Rally. Starting out at Goodwood, the pair, along with other UK, Spanish and Italian contestants, will race across the continent to reach the capital, Ulaanbaatar first, following their route of choice. Driving a souped-up 1 litre VW Polo, the pair are raising money for Cancer Research UK, The Christina Noble Children’s Foundation and The Neurofibromatosis Association, so dig deep for the daring and not-at-all dastardly duo.

FOR MEMBERS ONLY

Launching soon in Sussex, SoundLocker Project aims to provide a musical outlet for the yoof of today and the disadvantaged end of our community. Offering free and subsidised membership to under-18’s, offering workshops, tuition, rehearsal and recording space from professional tutors, the not-for-profit organisation also offers up free entry to certain music events, free downloadable tracks and more. To become a member simply e-mail [email protected] to jump on the bandwagon first.

DUKE OF YORK’S ROCKS

Brighton thespians, lend me your ears, and Synchronicity productions your talents. To celebrate the Duke of York cinema’s centenary this September, the producers are creating a radio-style remake of Graham Greene’s classic novel, Brighton Rock. The original film starring Richard Attenborough in 1947 having put Brighton on the movie map, it seems quite fitting to re-live the magic with a live performance. Original film clips will be screened behind, as a seven piece jazz band orchestrate the piece. E-mail [email protected] for more details.

MUSICAL MYSTERY TOUR So, some of you may be aware of Brighton’s newest and most elusive festival, hosted by Playgroup. All the talent is homegrown, plus some Playgroup favourites, with over 60 acts and DJs set to play over two stages. We’ve heard a rumour that Flash Bang Band may be playing, but that is all we know at this stage. Join the adventurous 1,000 on a mysterious bus-ride to the secret festival site. Sign up at playgroupfestival.com for three days of mayhem.
