GET BATTERED AT FISH FRY
Thursday night is Fish Fry night at Jam on Middle Street, with a sweatbox of 50s rhythm and blues mixed with a grateful crate-full of original Jamaican ska and bluebeat. Calypso, rocksteady and jazz also conspire to get your feet on the floor. 10 til 2 with drinks promos, sounds like a smart night out.
TIK TEK
Vovtek and Insight are taking a bit of a break from their usual Carbon duties to allow them the time to do other fun stuff. This happily includes a new monthly residency at Rikitiks on the first Friday of the month, spinning breakbeat and some superb drum’n’bass for the Carbon bar sessions. What with those dead tasty pizzas as well, Rikitiks is the place to be on this particular night, and probably many others besides.
WIGG OUT AT THE PELI
One of our favourite men currently pushing platters, Pete Wiggs out of St Etienne, is hosting a new regular Sunday soiree at the Pelirocco, along with his Radio Reverb co-presenter James Papademetrie. The Sunday Séance promises soul treasures, obese dub, electronic wrongbeat, mutant disco and other oddities, all under the umbrella of ‘fine and ill-matched music, popular or otherwise’. WHY DON’TCHA COME ON OVER, GALLERY?
We’re always pleased to hear about new galleries opening in Brighton – somehow they all seem to be a lot more inclusive than in certain other cities we won’t name. (London). The Rodhus Gallery on Hollingdean Road is on its third exhibition of paintings and site-specific art by musician and Joss Johnson. Also worth a look in the near future will be Sara Waldron’s paintings, artwork by Kate John and Abbi Kiki lighting products.
POP UP FASHION STOP
Local fashion designer extraordinaire Sarah Arnett has set up a new venture, the Pop Up Boutique, which is up and running and hidden away at 20 New Road. Known for her beautifully crafted large print silk dresses you can expect to find bargains of up to 70% off on the Spring/Summer collection. Doors remain open until the end of the month but you’ll have to be quick as they’ve appeared on Vouge.com and stock is selling fast.
NIPON DOWN TO REGALIA
Regalia is a tiny new Japanese store, and it’s the only one of its kind in Brighton. As well as stocking an array of Anime and Manga bags, wallets, and everything cute, it’s also home to an array of Lolita dresses and accessories, in all sizes. Lolita garments are the most cutesy, flouncy girly dresses ever, usually teamed with patent platforms and frilly parasols. Not for everyone, but if you’re into Japanese kitsch, you’ve just found your new favourite shop.
POT LUCK WITH POPCORN
From the creators of Secret Cinema comes a new monthly film club at the Duke Of York’s bringing mystery films to Brighton. The films will be a mix of previews, cult classics and low-key indie masterpieces (many of which often don’t get shown outside of London). But whatever the film, it will remain secret until the curtain lifts!
