Alex G, Tues 2nd Feb

October was full of releases vying for end of year acclaim. The month saw critical applause for Joanna Newsom, Deerhunter, Neon Indian and (oh yeah) Janet Jackson. Not surprising then that poor old Alex Giannascoli barely got a look-in.

It’s a shame because ‘Beach Music’, his first release on Domino, deserved much more. Instead of continuing the sonic trajectory of ‘DSU’, his most accessible tape to date, he spat in the face of the industry’s expectations.

If this is beach music then it’s the soundtrack to a bad acid trip whilst riding the merry-go-round. The introspective bedroom crooner warps his pitch and summons nostalgic spirits in the guise of Pavement and Elliott Smith.

When SOURCE caught Alex G in March we predicted bigger things to come. ‘Beach Music’ may delay mainstream success but there’s no more exciting or intriguing time to see him than now.

Tickets are £8.80 and are available online and instore at Resident.

Andy started writing because he was always endlessly chewing people's ears off about gigs and new records. Particularly into hip hop, electro and the early noughties guitar scene but enjoys the production on most things. Occasional DJ, will play Kanye West at inappropriate times at parties.
