Club Preview: Lucky Voice

A few years ago the Brighton karaoke experience meant a sneery afternoon with the dregs in Horatio’s down on the pier. But singing badly while drunk has had a re-imagining of late, partly due to PlayStation’s SingStar. Now everyone has loosened up at home it’s time for the next step – getting your tonsils out on the town. Obviously it’s a big leap to get all Celine in a room full of strangers, but Lucky Voice has brought the Japanese-style, private booth set-up to the city. And what ridiculous fun it is. With the right level of alcoholic refreshment, and the right group of non-judgemental friends, it’s riotous. A polished experience right down to a button that summons a waitress who will bring you cocktails, Lucky Voice is pure class. Literally thousands of songs to choose from means it’s best to get online and make a little set-list before you arrive. Then use the touch screen to rack the songs up, and away you go. There’s a couple of microphones for duets and you control the vocal/music ratio, meaning you can start gently. But if you’re anything like us you’ll be stood on the chair, fists clenched as you fight for the mic as some dodgy power ballad bursts out of the speakers. The editorial team’s serenade of our designer has ruined Elton John’s I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues for the rest of his life. But that seems a small price to pay for so much laughter.
