Proper Gander Review

These days there aren’t enough club nights where Brighton artists headline, but for the last two years Proper Gander has been rectifying this by promoting the city’s talent on the same level as headliners. Tonight local lad Riskotheque tops the bill. He’s one of the hardest working producers on our scene, with releases on Ninja Tune and Disfigured Dubz, as well as Love Sick Recordings which he co-owns with MarchMellow and Southbound Hangers.

His set has the Volks crowd raving like their drinks depend on it. Even the smoking area empties as everyone rushes onto the dancefloor and gets tribal to 120-170 bpm bass music. It’s not an easy act to follow but Afterdark and EllFiveDee go in hard, putting the Volks 12K sound system under heavy fire. By the end of the night the floor’s a mess and there’s sweat condensed on the ceiling, exactly how it should be.
