Smile Instigation Collective Review

The Smile Instigation Collective is a group from Brighton whose primary aim is to make people smile. They do this in a multitude of ways from adding pages to library books (with hidden messages or alternate endings) and complimenting someone anonymously to decorating a tree or public space. The only reason for these small gestures and acts is to spread smiles.

With this in mind, we head to the collective’s first ever night at the Northern Lights. We find a crowd busy with plasticine, giant Jenga and kilograms (yes, kilograms) of glitter. In addition, the pub is decorated beautifully, with amazing lights and pictures everywhere. The Smile Instigation Collective have got together some talented, local DJs and acts such as Prude leRude, KeeZee and Cult who are keeping those not involved in activities dancing and singing.

We’re also surprised to witness an amazing fire performance which goes some way towards recreating the feel of a festival. The activities come to a head when piñatas decorated with the faces of political leaders are strung up from the pub sign and joyously bashed around – until hundreds of packets of sweets fall out. This surreal night is a perfect combination of great music, fun activities and lovely people.

It’s really nice to see a local group at a local pub doing something with no aim other than to make people smile, and smile we definitely did. If you see the next night advertised (we have been told it will be at the Northern Lights again) then make sure to go along, it’s a sure way to get rid of any winter blues.
