Street Source No.2

This is the second edition of Street Source, a new SOURCE feature showcasing photos taken around Brighton over the course of a month by one of our photographers.

The idea is to share spontaneous moments around town – be it incidental street scenes, snapshots of people’s lives or images of the city as a landscape. Each month we’ll have images from a different photographer. Here’s how Gili approached her April challenge, and what she had to say about her experience.

Walking around Brighton with a camera is not something I’ve had the chance to do much since moving here in the summer of 2014.

Before relocating my life from Tel Aviv to Brighton, I would always come for short family visits and explore the city as a tourist. Throughout the years I took plenty of photos during those visits, and I’ve always found this city to be inspiring and unique.

Moving to Brighton changed it all for me. Don’t get me wrong, I still think it’s beautiful and I have to pinch myself occasionally just to remind myself that I do actually live here after wanting to for so many years… But I rarely take my camera out anymore, unless I’m on a photography mission or following a band around.

My phone’s camera has taken over my heavy DSLR and I had forgotten what it was like to explore the city through a lens.

For this project I finally took my camera out on a tour around town – and started exploring again.

This series is about changing the way we observe the familiar. It’s about changing your pace whilst walking the same path you’ve been using every day. It’s about finding beauty in random compositions and remembering why you fell in love with this city in the first place.
