Benjamin Clementine, Thurs 30th Nov

Benjamin Clementine makes a welcome return to Brighton later this month, showcasing material from his newly released second album ‘I Tell A Fly’.

The London-born singer-songwriter won the Mercury Music Prize in 2015 for his debut album ‘At Least For Now’, and comes fresh from a collaboration earlier this year with Gorillaz on their comeback song ‘Hallelujah Money’. For his sophomore effort he’s certainly resisted any urge to play it safe. ‘I Tell A Fly’ is a self-produced album on which he plays everything except the drums. Lead single ‘Phantom Of Aleppoville’ offers a pretty representative taster of the delicious, questing musical patchworks which haunt his new record, replete with frequent style and tempo changes.

A stunning live performer, Clementine honed his skills busking on the Paris Metro during a long spell of homelessness. David Byrne, who selected him for the 2015 Meltdown Festival, later reflected of his performance that it was “as if he were singing to directly to each person in that room”. The return of this uncompromising performer to our city promises to be one of the concert highlights of the year.
