Burt Bacharach, Monday 9th July

The King of Pop is coming to Brighton! No, it’s not another shabby Michael Jackson tribute act but, probably, the greatest living craftsman of the classic pop melody, Burt Bacharach. You name a catchy pop standard from the 50s to the 70s and there’s a strong chance that Burt had a hand in it. His collaboration with lyricist Hal David gave the world timeless gems such as ‘I Just Don’t Know What to Do with Myself’, ‘(They Long To Be) Close To You’ and ‘Make It Easy On Yourself’ and yet for some reason he has only been awarded eight Grammys, which shockingly is less than Adele.

From the very beginning of his career he was creating hits that still resonate today such as ‘The Story Of My Life’ and ‘Magic Moments’, he was Marlene Dietrich’s music director and conductor and even found time to pen the legendary Northern Soul anthem ‘Long After Tonight Is All Over’. Not to mention the soundtrack of the sixties he created for his muse Dionne Warwick.

He remains an effortlessly cool hipster and as he is approaching his 90th birthday this may be the last chance to see the maestro perform his repertoire live. We saw him at Love Supreme a couple of years ago and just about every song’s opening notes gave us goose pimples. This should be special.
