Where the Veil is Thin, Sun 5th May

Collaboration and innovation are essentials in making any arts festival unique and with this show as part of the opening weekend of the Brighton Festival extravaganza, it more than fulfils those expectations. The coming together of folk musician, composer and Scottish smallpipes wiz Brìghde Chaimbeul with choreographer/performer Maëva Berthelot and dancer Temitope Ajose sounds intriguing enough but their event at the Attenborough Centre promises to be more than a curio.

The trio present Where The Veil Is Thin, an enactment of the final dance of Cailleach Bheur, a key figure in Gaelic mythology, before (spoiler alert) her death at the coming of spring. The Cailleach, a one-eyed giantess associated with the creation of harsh landscapes and relentless winters represents a figure of momentous power and eventual decline, a trajectory that the piece sets out to explore.

Where The Veil Is Thin brings the fantastical and fundamental together with new music from the award winning Chaimbeul (her first since the ground breaking ‘Carry Them With Us’ album) interpreted by Berthelot and Ajose, who as choreographers and performers instinctively push the boundaries.

Unsurprisingly tickets are flying for this show which is shaping up to be a festival highlight at the very start of the season. As the strap line goes… “Be there”.
