Steve Angello

All Time Top 100 6th Birthday/Rock All-Dayer
Globe Fri 1st/Gladstone Sun 24th
Quite a month for the new ATT100 crew, with another birthday – giving them a year under new management – and the return of the messy rock music all day session. Last year the Cobbler’s Thumb courtyard was absolutely packed with the great and the good (and the bad) of the Brighton music scene. Killer music too.

15 years Of Wiggle Anniversary
Concorde 2 Sat 2nd
This last year has seen the return of tech house in a fairly major way, as many of the electro DJs step back from the noisiness and the minimal DJs start boring themselves as well as their dancefloors. Wiggle – aka Terry Francis, Nathan Coles and Evil Eddie Richards basically invented this subtle mix of techno and house, with their Croydon Wiggle parties getting serious dance bods down from London and up from Brighton. If you’re ever been, then you’ll know that you need to be at the Concorde to celebrate. This year’s Faith party, really.

Aeroplane
Coalition Sat 2nd
Leaving behind the mid-noughties electro obsessions and hitting the upward curve of the incoming Italo saturation are Aeroplane, hailing from the dance heartland of Belgium (do I need to mention Soulwax here? Nah, probably not). On balance, they’ve probably had as many hyped remixes this year as their amis Belges, including the sensational Italo ’84 remix of Sebastian Tellier’s Kilometer. Their stock is rising like their winged namesakes, and last month’s Mixmag cover CD can only aid their ascent.

Carbon 5th Birthday
Volks Fri 8th
The Carbon crew are one of the toughest in Brighton drum’n’bass. Not because they’re all fackin’ geezers you don’t mess with, and not because they play the hardest music. No, they’re so firm in their beliefs they won’t be bent or shaken. Quality music, not stamped on by MCs, it’s obvious why they’ve made it to five years. We’ll be down with our cameras and notepads to record the carnage as Lynx, Prolix, Insight, The Insiders and Voytek take to the decks.

Steve Angello
Digital Sat 9th
In terms of pure, straight down the line house music DJs there can’t be many bigger than Steve Angello. He might not be the household name that Guetta is, but he commands so much respect from his fellow DJs and producers that his tunes are always an event. He’s even put Sweden on the map with his House Mafia. We haven’t noticed him playing down here much, so take this chance to see why his star is rising so swiftly.

Miss Moneypennys
Ocean Rooms Sat 9th
Miss Moneypennys is the queen of all glam nights. Back in the 90s we remember actually going shopping for clothes that would get us in. If anyone is positioned to do a classics night it’s them, and they’ve drafted in a line-up of DJs who know the score in Timo Garcia, Jim Shaft Ryan and Brandon Block. We’re very pleased to hear the latter is still alive. The outrageous Brum crew will also fully dress the Ocean Rooms, Miss Moneypennys style.

Tru Thoughts’ 10th Birthday
Spiegeltent 17th
Wow, ten years. Incredible stuff. So many great records, from Bonobo to Quantic to TM Juke to Alice Russell to… We’ll chat to them later in the year, but first Flevan’s DJ set (see interview) is joined by Hint and head honcho Rob Luis on the decks and live performances from Belleruche, Natural Self and Lizzy Parks. If nothing else it will show just how diverse the label’s line-up is now. Congrats guys, we’ll see you at the bar.

Disco Libero
Audio Sat 23rd
Schtumm have been carefully chipping away at people’s attitudes to disco in this town for a long while now, and it looks like we might be ready to join London on this cosmic journey. Guest DJ Severino is representing Horse Meat Disco, one of the new disco scene leaders, following Disco Bloodbath’s set last month to prove that this fresh night is serious about getting the talent to the coast. If you’re not sure what all the fuss is in the style mags, here’s where you find out for free.

A Night at the Chateau
Coalition Fri 29th
What a way to kick off a new record label. Chateau is a new imprint from Sam Schtumm and Cagedbaby but before the records start to flow they’ve got the first in a line up of killer parties. There’s a live set from Cagedbaby, DJ set from Sam Schtumm and Johnny Rock’s new They Live outfit and a guest slot from FC Kahuna. If the label’s even half as good they’ll have castles full of cash by the end of the year. Also
