Gwenno & H. Hawkline, Thurs 24th September

Aug 24, 2015

Posted by Jake Kennedy

Something of a Welsh double header this one, as both artists have grown in stature enough in their own right over the past six months to make them worthy of solo spots. And, you know, we mustn’t grumble – seeing these two on the same bill at the bargain price of £8 is a steal.

Gwenno, once of The Pipettes but now trading in a rain-soaked Wales-cum-Cornwall high concept pysch, will surely be the token ‘headliner’, especially following the acclaim and airplay of this year’s fabulous ‘Y Dydd Olaf’ album reissue on Heavenly.

Meanwhile, H. Hawkline, sometimes augmented live by the Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce on bass, deals in an altogether more wonky pop – along the lines of Gorky’s and occasionally even Gruff Rhys. He’s enduringly compelling, self-effacing and mildly bonkers, and you get the feeling his best work is yet to come.

Gwenno and H Hawkline, Otherplace at The Basement, Thursday 24th September 2015
