Benjamine Clementine in London (by Micky Clément)

Benjamin Clementine, Thurs 3rd December

Benjamin Clementine returns to Brighton on 3rd December to parade his impressive piano-driven vocals in the glorious environs of St George’s Church.

Mercury Prize-nominated Clementine was born in London but discovered his musical chops in Paris. “I am an expressionist. I sing what I say, I say what I feel and I feel what I play,” he says.

Compared to the likes of Antony Hegarty, his theatrical tenor voice draws a lot from Nina Simone, but creates its own landscape through his original songs and striking style. There is an ocean of feeling and emotion in Clementine’s album ‘At Least For Now’, with his lyrics drawing on a rich autobiographical vein. It’s a beautiful record that bears repeated listening, and will make for an impressive and memorable show in the cathedralesque St George’s in Kemp Town.
