Club Review: Supercharged

Supercharged

We haven’t been down to Supercharged in an official capacity for a few years. The reason for that is that we’re all about championing the underdogs and newcomers. Everyone was talking about the best breaks night in the country (voted into the best 50 clubs to play at worldwide in DJmag a couple of years ago) so they didn’t need us.

But for two reasons we’re back with our notepad. Firstly they’re celebrating their ninth birthday – almost unheard of in midweek clubbing – and secondly there’s been a rather interesting twist to the music policy. Sure, the international stars or breaks still make it a regular stop off. Freq Nasty (10th), Napt (17th) and Ali B (24th) all visit in September for example. But more interestingly big-bassed artists from other scenes are now popping along too.

The night we visit both Mumdance and New York’s Drop The Lime bring their twisted take on grimy rave-tech, while The Qemists (10th) are followed by DJ Marky and Shy FX for some of the best drum’n’bass around. It’s a diverse policy but one that hangs together perfectly thanks to the breaks core that the variations spring from like a brainstorming diagram. Back when they started all the best dance nights were midweek but now it looks like Supercharged is holding up that tradition all on its own. Nine years on it’s still as interesting as ever – as proven by the full dancefloor of smiling dancers.
